Puzzle 1 of 3 · Mate in two

Relaxed mode · No timer

You move, your opponent replies, and you deliver checkmate with your second move. Take as many attempts as you need.

I need a hint

Your rook can reach the eighth rank with check. Calculate the opponent’s blocking move too.

Show solution and explanation

1. Rd8+ Re8 2. Rxe8#

Rd8+ forces Black’s rook to block with ...Re8: the king cannot escape because its pawns occupy f7, g7 and h7. Rxe8# removes the final defender.

TRAIN IN CYCLES · NO COUNTDOWN

Train chess tactics in cycles. Recognise the pattern.

Some moves take calculation at first. With practice, you begin to recognise them. Return to the same positions, understand why each solution works and train yourself to spot those ideas in your own games.

01

Understand the idea

Choose your level and solve a set of 30 positions. Take your time and review the solution on the board: what is threatened, which move works and why.

02

Return to the same set

Repeat the same positions in the same order. We suggest four cycles, and you can keep going afterwards. Stop when you need to and pick up where you left off.

03

Recognise and compare

Compare unassisted solves, mistakes and thinking time across cycles. Time helps you track your progress; there is no deadline for solving a position.

The masters’ ideas, on your board.

Practise positions from real games by Alekhine, Capablanca, Morphy and other great names in chess history. Each exercise includes the players, event and year to place the position in its original game.

Start with master checkmates. Rush64 Pro adds collections and levels, including mixed sets with material gains and defensive resources.

Train your intuition to play better.

Repetition aims to make patterns familiar so you can spot opportunities more naturally. Understanding an idea and finding it again may help you make fewer tactical mistakes: a valuable skill if you want to improve your Elo.

Improvement depends on your practice and how you apply it in games. No specific Elo gain is guaranteed; cycles do not change your Rush64 rating either.

The idea behind the cycles

This mode draws on the repetition-based training popularised by Hans Tikkanen and Axel Smith in The Woodpecker Method: returning to the same set of exercises to reinforce tactical patterns. Rush64 adapts that idea to sessions at your own pace, without a countdown.

Rush64 is an independent product, with no affiliation or endorsement from the authors or publisher. Positions are selected from historical games and explanations are our own; the book’s exercise collection and text are not reproduced.

Open Coach → Train in cycles. Your first set of 30 positions is free with a free account.

Repeat your free set as often as you like. More collections and levels are available with Rush64 Pro.

Before you download Rush64 Chess

Is Rush64 Chess free?

The download and your first round are free, with no account needed. A free account also lets you start a cycle training set of 30 positions. The app includes ads and optional purchases; Rush64 Pro offers more collections and levels.

Where can I download the app?

On Google Play for Android and the App Store for iPhone. The buttons on this page link to the official Rush64 Chess listings. Your store will show whether your device is compatible.

Do I need to know how to play chess?

You should know how the pieces move. The first round includes introductory challenges; you can then practise calculation and tactical patterns. Free guides are also available in the Learn section.

Do I need an account to try it?

You can try the first round without creating an account. Cycle training requires a free account to choose your first set of 30 positions and save your progress. You do not need a Chess.com or Lichess account.

What can I train with the puzzles?

Tactical vision, calculation and pattern recognition: checks, checkmates, captures, pins and forks. Review solutions on the board to understand the sequence.

How long do I have to solve each puzzle?

In timed rounds, the time available varies with the puzzle and training pace. The Daily challenge allows 64 seconds and one official attempt. Cycle training has no countdown or lost lives: thinking time is recorded only to compare your cycles.

How does cycle training work?

Solve a set, then return to the same positions in the same order to understand and reinforce tactical patterns. We recommend four cycles; you can pause, resume and keep repeating afterwards. Your first set of 30 positions is free with an account; Rush64 Pro offers more collections and levels.

Will cycle training help me improve my Elo?

It may help you recognise tactical ideas and reduce mistakes in games. It supports improvement, which depends on consistent practice and applying what you learn in games; it does not guarantee a specific Elo gain. Completing cycles does not change your Rush64 rating.

Is the app available in English?

Yes. The app supports English and Spanish. Choose your language in the app settings.

Can I play on my computer?

Yes: try a free three-puzzle round on this page, with no timer, account or installation. You can also solve the guide exercises in your browser. For the daily challenge, cycle training and social features, download the Android or iPhone app; scan the QR code with your phone if you are on a computer.
